Fashion Winners and Losers At Stakes Day 2013

As the Melbourne Cup Carnival draws to a close, today we present the final “red carpet” wrap up of the fashion winners and losers embracing spring racing and all the fashion pitfalls and gaudy outfits that naturally come with being boozed up on champagne, gambling, and aimlessly yelling at horses. It’s a really beautiful time, obviously.

While yesterday’s Emirates Stakes Day didn’t draw the crowd of B grade celebrities (it’s saying something when even Jennifer Hawkins isn’t there) from afar that the big day did, it was a family-friendly affair that saw Junior fashions on the field mingling among the stalwarts of the Carnival looking visibly exhausted after doing this whole thing for the fourth time over. The Stakes, as they don’t say, weren’t high.

Being the family-friendly event that it is, Stakes Day was dotted with adorable, stylish and devastatingly chic little monsters like these two. Can’t even deal.

Kris Smith deserves a round of applause after maintaining an admirably cheery veneer despite attending like, six of these events in the past few days. Maddy King channels pretty private school girl vibes, while her shoes so perfectly match her skin tone that her feet appear to be sprouting sharp heels. I know nothing about fashion but I think that look is a good thing?

Victoria’s Secret angel Chanel Iman‘s dress/look is irrelevant when her headpiece looks so menacing; its antlers so grasshopper-like. Still, Iman looks impeccably fierce.

Everyone’s favoured Hi5 gal Charli Robinson wears a fun summery dress, headpiece that is probably much nicer and far more delicate on closer inspection than it looks afar, and a forced grin that asks why the hell am I here.

Lauren Phillips looks precious in a dress adorned with your Windows 98 cascading screensaver of choice. She is joined by Lachlan Spark wearing an outfit destined for, and only pull-offable by Harry Styles.

Jiordan Tolli took the approach of shoving corsages into her top knot and inexplicably wearing a furry vest over what might be an OK dress underneath. Fashion failings forgiven; Tolli looks like the she would be the funnest gal to be with at the open bar.

Isabella Giovinazzo and Cassie Howarth attempt to compensate their blindingly orange fake tans with equally neon dresses. It kind of works.

Sophie van den Akker looks like an angry hot bride with a disarmingly perplexing sheer magician’s top hat. A daring combo, sure.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s son Connor Cruise was invited for some reason and exudes equal levels of swag and apathy.

As the week of the Melbourne Cup Carnival goes on, Emma Freedman has been exponentially dwarfed by her elaborate and swathing headpieces. One more event and her hat du jour would have literally eaten her face.
