WATCH: Fernando Alonso Walks Away From Brutal Australian Grand Prix Crash

Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso has walked away from a thoroughly terrifying crash at today’s Grand Prix in Melbourne.

The McLaren-Honda driver clipped Esteban Gutierrez’ rear-left tire during lap 18 at the Albert Park circuit, before smashing into the barrier and flipping twice into the track’s gravel traps.

Almost unbelievably, both drivers were able to leave their vehicles mostly unharmed.

As a result of the debris that absolutely littered the track, the race was temporarily postponed; it’s been restarted now, hopefully without any more bloody near-death experiences for its competitors.

Before the red flag was waved, Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was in first place, followed by Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg and Vettel’s teammate Kimi Raikkonen. Australia’s own Daniel Ricciardo has powered his way into fourth.

Shout-outs to the engineers behind these safety features: you guys are the real heroes here.
