Mick Fanning’s Brother Peter Died Due To An Enlarged Heart, Autopsy Says

Two weeks ago, the surfing world looked on in devastation as news came to light that champion surfer Mick Fanning‘s older brother Peter, 43, had died unexpectedly overnight, hours before Mick was due to compete in the Billabong Pipeline Masters.

At the time, there was some speculation that drugs had played a role in his death, but his mother, Elizabeth Osborne, has put those rumours firmly to rest.

Speaking outside Peter’s funeral today in Tweed Heads, NSW, she told the Gold Coast Bulletin that the autopsy showed he died from an enlarged heart, which stemmed from a serious hyperthyroid problem that had almost killed him in 2012.

She said that since the scare, he’d been taking heart medication and eating a healthy diet, but was unable to talk in any more detail about his death.

“I can’t do it – I’m too devastated,” she said in a text message.

Hundreds of family and friends attended Peter’s funeral, where he was farewelled with the Rolling Stones‘ song Wild Horses.

RIP Peter.

I am so grateful for the incredible love and well wishes that have come my way since learning of my eldest brother’s passing this morning. Like all my big brothers, Peter will always be a hero to me. I have so many great memories of the good times we have all spent together and they will be with me forever. We recently caught up and he told me how proud he was of me and how much he loves watching me compete. Today was one of the most challenging days of my life but I knew I could find the strength to take part in the final event of the season because that’s what Pete would want. I also want to give special thanks to my other brothers – my friends on tour – for their support, I couldn’t have got through today without them. I would ask for some privacy on this matter while we come to terms with this devastating loss. Big thanks from our entire family. Tell the special people in your life you love them and give them a hug.
