Almandin Takes Home The Melbourne Cup In Split-Second Finish

Almandin, ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, has won the Melbourne Cup in a thrilling split-second finish ahead of Heartbreak City, ridden by Hong Kong-based Joao Moreira. This is the fifth Melbourne Cup victory for Australian owner Lloyd Williams. If you placed your bet on another horse because you truly believed in it (unlikely) or because you chose one at random (very likely) then you are out of pocket.

“I’m pretty emotional about this one,” Williams said. “They’ve just done such a great job with him. It was a super effort from everyone.”
The last 400m were a pretty thrilling affair, with Almandin and Heartbreak City punch for punch as they pulled ahead of the favourite to win Hartnell. Bad luck.
Here it is on vidya if you missed it:

There you have it. The race that stops a nation – and one that is considered increasingly controversially – is done again for another year. Have the rest of the day off.
Apparently Malcolm Turnbull won his office sweep, which is… fine for him, I guess.
