A disgusting display of racism has been caught on camera by a Muslim couple who were viciously abused as they sat in their car on the grounds of Sydney’s Macquarie Uni last Friday.
Ramzy Alamudi said he and his wife – a student studying medical science – were about to go celebrate the completion of her degree’s final exam when an Asian woman they’d noticed staring at them launched at their car, calling her a “Muslim terrorist” and demanding she take off the Islamic veil, or niqab, she was wearing.
“The lady flips it and sticks her middle finger right at us! Me, being completely dumbfounded ‘Ah, is everything ok?!’. At this point, she blows up in a rage… starts pointing at my wife and screaming ‘Fuck you! Take it off!!’ (referring to my wife’s veil).
“She then runs towards our car and I urge my wife to lock her door and start recording if anything happens. The video will tell you the rest of the story… she pounds on my window and continues to hurl racial and discriminatory slurs at my wife. ‘Take it off! You Muslim terrorist! Who the fuck are you?’.”
Another student who witnessed the attack, Emily Guff, said the woman was “demanding his man show her some form of ID, calling out that she didn’t belong here, and that we shouldn’t let her walk around freely because we didn’t know what she could have hiding under her dress.”
Alamudi – who posted the shocking video to Facebook, where it’s since racked up more than 1 million views – only bit back when it appeared the woman was going to snap of the car’s windscreen wipers, at which point he got out of the car and moved her “away from my wife until several witnesses assisted in the attempt to neutralize her till security came.”
“Unfortunately, this type of Islamophobia isn’t isolated to this one individual and incident. Rather, it is an overarching systematic issue in our society,” he added.
Here’s the footage of the incident, which shows the woman yelling as she bangs on the car windows and tries to open its doors.
The 35-year-old woman has since been charged with common assault and damage and/or destroy property.
She’ll appear at Burwood Local Court on March 13.
