Victoria Police Arrest Five, Foil ANZAC Day Terrorism Plot

Counter-terrorism raids in Victoria today have been conducted this morning by Victoria Police, with seven searches on residences in Narre Warren, Hampton Park, Hallam and Eumemmerring being executed. Five men between the ages of 18 and 19 were arrested today, with two 18-year-old men being arrested for offences related to terrorism.

An attack was allegedly planned to coincide with an ANZAC event in Melbourne. Acting Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton said, according to Fairfax:

“We have acted swiftly to disrupt an attack intended to bring harm to everyday Victorians going about their business.”

Three other men were also arrested today, however they were not charged with terrorism-related offences. All five men, however, were reportedly “associates” of Numan Haider, who was killed last year during a Police counter-terrorism raid. Patton claimed that the planned terrorism plot was “ISIS inspired”, saying:

“Some evidence that we’ve collected at a couple of the scenes – and some other information we have – leads us to believe that this particular matter was ISIS-inspired.”
