ICYMI, Barack Obama gave a *very* powerful address on gun violence this week, surrounded by the family and friends of people whose lives had been taken by gun-toting terrorists in various mass shootings across the US.
Because he’s human, and the pointless loss of human life is devastating by anyone’s standard, POTUS was so overcome with emotion as he announced executive actions to make obtaining a firearm much more difficult – remembering the 20 kids killed in 2012 by a gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary School – that he shed a few tears at the lectern.
But it wasn’t long before various conservatives – mostly Fox News commentators – accused him of fake-crying; Fox News’ Andrea Tantaros said on Tuesday she would “check the podium for a raw onion” because she felt Obama’s reaction was “not really believable.”
Do these *look* like crocodile tears?
“Daily Show” host Trevor Noah – who’s clearly warming to the opportunity that his gig presents to flip the bird at derps – made a point of dragging Andrea/Fox for being so callous, airing her commentary on last night’s show before firing off this takedown:
“Are you f**king kidding me? Shedding tears when you think of murdered children is not really believable? You know what, there is something here that’s not really believable: the fact that the rest of us have to share the title of human being with you.”
“See that thing you’re feeling right now? That pain in your chest,” Trevor added after airing the clip of Obama tearing up. “That comes from watching someone weep on national television, because he knows that society can do better than to file the shooting of children under ‘shit happens.’ That feeling is how you know that you are human.
“No matter how opposed to Obama’s policies some people may be or how cynical their politics, they have to at least acknowledge and respect the raw authenticity of that emotion. Or so you would think.”
