Earlier this year, Splash Data released a list of the worst possible passwords you could be using – ‘123456’ and ‘password’ took the top spots, while ‘696969’ also got a look-in. The below list is slightly more, um, niche in its scope, but no less intriguing.
The good people at CynoSure Prime took the time to comb through the data from the recent Ashley Madison hack, and came up with some statistics based on the roughly 11.7 million that they came up with.
They found that most people – or at least most Ashley Madison users – favour 6-8 character passwords, that are a combination of lower-case letters and numbers, or just plain lower-case letters.
When they searched for matches between user name and password, they found roughly 630,000 accounts, so it’s probably also a good tip not to do that.
Aside from the raw stats, a sample of which you can delve into here, CynoSure Prime also put together a list of the most interesting passwords, and this is the part where they truly did God’s work. They found:
