The ‘Serial’ Team Is Working On A New Podcast & Yep There’s Murder In It

After the wild, runaway success of the first season of Serial, the spinoff of This American Life hosted by Sarah Koenig, the second season kiiinda flopped.

It was actually a solid, good piece of reporting on an interesting topic, but let’s get real here: it did not feature any murders to speak of. Sure, it was an interesting and lengthy meditation on duty and obligation and man’s place in relation to the great power structures that surround him… but also there were no murders, and people really wanted some goddamn murders.
Well, your appetite might be whet somewhat. The crew behind Serial announced today that they’ve formed their own production company – creatively titled Serial Productions – and they’re working on a new show, called S-Town, which is scheduled to drop sometime in March.
The show is described as an “arty” and “novelistic” piece of non-fiction, but the plot description might get you fired up if you’re craving some more murder stories in your life. From the release:

Production of S-Town began when a man reached out to This American Life bitterly complaining about his small Alabama town. He wanted a reporter to investigate the son of a wealthy family who had allegedly been bragging that he got away with murder. Brian agreed to look into it. But then someone else ended up dead, and another story began to unfold — about a nasty feud, a hunt for hidden treasure and the mysteries of one man’s life.

Murder, a town in the rural South, dynastic feuds, treasure… mmm yeah sounds like damn fine podcast.

Serial Productions apparently has two other projects currently in production. Maybe Season 3 of Serial? We’ll see.
