A teacher at Sydney‘s prestigious Newington College has been refused bail after being charged with both possessing child abuse material and sharing child pornography.
The Australian Federal Police is alleging that Reinier Jessurun, 52, shared the exploitative images online using a fake persona.
Jessurun was arrested on Tuesday and later refused bail at Central Local Court, following searches premises in Sydney suburbs Edgecliff and Stanmore.
Jessurun teaches at the boy’s school’s Wyvern House, a K-6 school in Stanmore.
On Thursday, the school’s acting headmaster David Roberts emailed a statement to parents and alumni, clarifying that “the teacher was immediately stood down pending the outcome of court proceedings“.
He also stated that the college is working with the AFP after being contacted by them, assuring that there is “nothing to indicate the material seized involved, or was distributed to, college students”.
As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald, the teacher’s online CV stated that he had previously taught at several schools, including Sydney’s Scots College Preparatory School, Mosman Church of England Preparatory School and Arkana College. According to the CV, he has also taught at Queensland‘s Matthew Flinders Anglican College, and internationally.
Jessurun will next appear in court on June 6.
