Scores of Sydney’s ardent David Bowie fans have found themselves notably bereft of stardust, as tributes in the Thin White Duke’s honour have quickly swelled past capacity.
While you’d a fair few expect punters to turn out for Sydney Festival’s free commemorative DJ sets, the crowds at Hyde Park absolutely dwarf the event’s apparently 2,000-strong capacity.
Ah Sydney. Turned up to Bowie tribute at the festival and the line is infinite. Sparse inside but nanny state capacity rules the day. #bowie

.@kymtje said the queue was mental for Sydney festival Bowie night. No joke. And that many behind us already. pic.twitter.com/nYIVzrjhdY

Here’s our first Bowie fan at the #sydney tribute event. If you’re not here already, might rethink it: huge queue! pic.twitter.com/PEisiLp20h

Several would-be attendees have also claimed the event, which had been advertised on the Sydney Festival’s website and on social media, didn’t mention the event’s capacity at all.
Others say that the colossal lines have remained stationary, despite a number fans leaving the Meriton Festival Village area.
.@sydney_festival you should have told people that Bowie event was limited capacity – what a total farce. 2,000 ppl pic.twitter.com/z75P1aGQGk

@sydney_festival thanks for the reply, but your own Facebook post I read yesterday did not say it was limited capacity. Not clear at all!

@sydney_festival understand but hundreds have left and lines are still stagnant.

The tribute’s made of two sets, one taking up the 6.15 – 7.30 slot, with the second at 8.45 – 9.45. Judging by Australia’s reaction to the icon’s death and the massive crowds at tonight’s event, the lesson to be learnt here is that David Bowie DJ sets may as well run on the hour, every hour until the end of time.
