Real Concerning New Poll Reckons 1 In 5 Aussies Think Being Gay Is Immoral

A new poll by Ray Morgan in the leadup to the federal election has found that just over 1 in 5 Australians believe that homosexuality is immoral – meaning that they agreed with the statement “I believe homosexuality is immoral”.
The suggestion here is that these people quite obviously would not vote in favour of same-sex marriage were a plebiscite to be conducted. I mean, I think that’s obvious. There could be multiple layers of ideology going on here that I won’t even attempt to decipher.
It’s not quite equal amongst the parties as you can see: 28% of Coalition supporters believe homosexuality is immoral, as opposed to 15% of Labor voters and 4% of Greens voters. I don’t know who those Greens voters are but good luck to them with whatever the hell they’re trying to achieve.
Obviously the methodology for that specific question in this of this kind of poll can be a little off – anyone can claim a voting intention regardless of whether they actually hold it – but this gives some insight as to how many Australians aren’t onboard with LGBTIA+ rights full stop.
The poll also breaks it down by electorate, and 8/10 electorates that are least accommodating of homosexuality are held by the Coalition. Though, to be fair, number 2 and 3 are held by Labor candidates. It certainly backs the claim that many in the Coalition are skittish over the plebiscite because of the possible backlash by some in their electorates.
Either way, it’s a pretty concerning figure. If the Coalition wins, this plebiscite campaign is not going to be a great time, is it?
