MissChu’s Tuckshop Goes Into Administration in Sydney

Beloved Vietnamese street food business MissChu has entered voluntary administration, and will have to retrench at least a third of its staff in Sydney

The Sydney Morning Herald report the company have appointed administrators, who met with staff and creditors this morning. Of the staff who are staying, some will remain on their permanent contracts, while some will move to casual.
Locations in Melbourne and London will not be affected by the voluntary administration, and at this stage it appears that stores around Sydney will continue trading “as usual”.
MissChu has previously been hailed as a great business success story. The company was started by Nga ‘Nahji’ Chu, also known as the ‘Queen Of Rice Paper Rolls’, who came to Australia with her family as a refugee from Laos.
It began as a catering business in her kitchen, before expanding to retail shops in Sydney, Melbourne and London. MissChu’s home delivery service is promoted with the slogan ‘You Ling, We Bling’, making fun of the racist slurs Chu faced as a child.
The news is hopefully not all bad. Administrators have taken control of day-to-day operations in Sydney, and say it will be “business as usual” as they explore options for the business, which they hope will be sold as a going concern in the first quarter of 2015.
