Melbourne is reportedly entering a snap lockdown from midnight tonight in an attempt to curb the sudden surge in positive COVID cases across the city and its surrounds.

Multiple outlets and journalists are reporting the news, despite no official announcement from the Victorian government, but a press conference is anticipated for Thursday afternoon.

Per the ABC, it’s not yet determined how long the lockdown will last. It’s also yet to be determined how far the lockdown will extend between Melbourne and regional Victoria, considering the current exposure sites stretch across the city’s suburbs to the surf coast south west of Melbourne.

The Herald Sun is reporting that the snap lockdown will last between three and five days, but details are scant right now.

Health officials and the government spent Thursday in discussions on the state’s current COVID cases, and is reportedly deciding that going in hard and early on the contagious strain was key to getting on top of the cases.

This decision comes as the state recorded 10 new cases across multiple exposure sites on Wednesday, and a further two cases today from an AFL game at the MCG on Saturday, July 10.

As of Thursday morning, masks are back on again at all indoor settings apart from homes, and anywhere outdoors where you can’t maintain 1.5m distance from people who you don’t live with.

Melbourne schools are also likely to be closed during the snap lockdown, with three schools already shut down due to teachers and students returning positive results.

More to come.
