Maasarwe, a 21-year-old exchange student from Baqa al-GharbiyyeIsrael, had been travelling home from a comedy event when she was attacked on Tuesday night. Her body was found near a Bundoora shopping centre on Wednesday morning.

The Greensborough man has been charged with one count of murder, Victoria Police announced on Saturday afternoon. He is expected to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court shortly.

The charges come a day after hundreds gathered on the steps of Victorian Parliament in silent vigil to honour Maasarwe. The vigil was followed by a ‘Flower Only’ route 86 tram – the tram Maasarwe had boarded to return home.

Earlier, another vigil was held at La Trobe University where Maasarwe had been studying.
