Greyhound Races Are Being Named After Anti-Ban Babblers Like Miranda Devine

After another sterling PR job from New South Wales‘ fearless leader Mike Baird, the greyhound racing ban – which was cheered by animal rights activists but booed, shockingly, by people who race greyhounds for money – is gone. Along with his backflip on sharks and his (maybe) planned backflip on lockouts, it’s a bloody wonder we didn’t see the bloke springing off a diving board at Rio.

Well, in a final up yours to the people who thought that an industry which did very little to address the mass killing of ‘unfit’ greyhounds might be a little bit naff, reports indicate that the tracks out at Gunnedah are naming their races after the pollies, broadcasters and right-wing commentators who pushed Baird to reverse his take.

Look, it’s the famous THANK YOU RAD HADLEY race, and the THANK YOU MIRANDA DEVINE race, and the THANK YOU ALAN JONES race.
Hopefully these are just the victory laps before the industry takes a good, hard look at itself and makes some strong moves toward internal reform. The ban’s gone, but the attention of the nation isn’t – they’re not going to get away with the kind of blasé appoach to self-regulation as they did before.
