A petition asking HBO to remake the final season of Game of Thrones has surpassed ten thousand signatures following Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) stunning heel turn in the show’s penultimate episode.
To put the likelihood of their goal into perspective: if each of those disappointed fans donated a dollar, they could probably recreate a second of the show.
Signatories of the Change.org petition, entitled ‘Remake Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers‘, claim showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have messed up story arcs based on author George R. R. Martin‘s original work.
While Martin’s work anchored much of the series, Benioff and Weiss ran out of books before they ran out of show. For quite some time, the showrunners have had to formulate the show’s remaining plot points based on pointers provided by Martin – instead of fleshed-out novels.
While some viewers have praised the pair for making bold choices, others have been… less receptive.
“Because this isn’t subverting expectation, it’s just really bad television,” one person wrote on the Change.org site.
“I understand it’s GOT but don’t trash 8 yrs of character building for what they think will shock and awe us. It sucks”, said another.
For what it’s worth, alleged plot information which leaked before the final three episodes of the series went to air was proven to be accurate. That leak also suggests what will happen in the show’s last episode. If it is correct, a few more people may feel the need to sign that petition.
