Pneumonia Caused 24 Y.O. Australian Woman’s Death In Fiji, Says Family

The husband of a 24-year-old Australian woman who died while honeymooning in Fiji has revealed she suffered a fatal fungal infection in her lungs.

Children’s nurse Kelly Clarke was pronounced dead on Friday due to severe bilateral pneumonia, says Chase Clarke. He added there were four other “minor” contributing factors, which will be announced at a later date.

The pair were in Sigatoka, Fiji to celebrate their recent wedding, and to attend their friends’ wedding ceremony. After falling ill on Wednesday, Clarke was admitted to Lautoka Hospital. She was told she had contracted typhoid.

While in hospital, her condition worsened, forcing staff to place her in an induced coma. On Facebook, her brother Murray Shaw wrote “she went into cardiac arrest 5 times in the last hour and the medivac team didnt make it in time.”

It was initially thought Clarke died of the infectious disease, but subsequent blood tests showed otherwise.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Chase Clarke described Kelly as “a wonderful kind soul,” adding “the last thing you expect on your honeymoon is to lose your wife, she had her whole life ahead of her.”

Clarke said the family is waiting for approval to transport her body back to Australia.

RIP.
