Now, we know that no one is really worried about Smash Mouth in 2016, which is fair. But maybe we should be. Because they really don’t seem okay.
Yesterday, they re-started their extremely unofficial Twitter campaign to dispel the myth that they’re only famous because they were on the Shrek soundtrack.
@samprussell24 @NBA @warriors Oh we didn’t have a #1 before Shrek was even thought of? Come on Sammy!
— Smash Mouth (@smashmouth) June 13, 2016
@MikeKrupka @RobertKrupka @DanWeaver21 Funny because after our first #1 and a Top10 follow-up Shrek wasn’t even created yet. #AllOut
— Smash Mouth (@smashmouth) June 13, 2016
They are very, very, very dedicated to this campaign, sometimes even replying to tweets they aren’t tagged in. Which means they are probably searching for the terms ‘Smashmouth’ and ‘Shrek’ together, to find all tweets talking about the movie’s OST.
This habit of defensively tweeting back at people who link their fame to Shrek has been going on for over a whole damn year now. It is not good.
See for yourself:
@jacobdotexe News to us? We already had a #1 hit with “WalkinOnTheSun and “AllStar” was already Top10 before Shrek was released.
— Smash Mouth (@smashmouth) April 4, 2015
@mwoods941 Already had a #1 Hit song(Walkin) and All Star was already Top10 on it’s way to #1 before Shrek was even released. #IfFactsMatter
— Smash Mouth (@smashmouth) July 17, 2015
@TheOGLilB Nope, We already had a #1 hit song on every chart in every Country and AllStar was already top10 on it’s way to #1 before Shrek.
— Smash Mouth (@smashmouth) July 29, 2015
@ThinkYouKnowMus It was released before the first Shrek movie too.
— Smash Mouth (@smashmouth) July 29, 2015
@DivaaMcCurdy Love TheBig Green guy, just saying the song was heading to #1 with or without Donkey.
— Smash Mouth (@smashmouth) August 14, 2015
@emmaretzer Yes we wrote a song that was already top10 when the studio licensed it for their film about a green ogre.thx!
— Smash Mouth (@smashmouth) June 26, 2015
They also get super, super devo when anyone calls them a ‘one hit wonder’:
@ThisTedTalks We’re actually a 6hit wonder with two #1’s.
— Smash Mouth (@smashmouth) August 16, 2015
@_Ash_Bell__ @LadyEli4Liberty @tedcruz @POTUS 6Hit Wonders, Two #1’s. You wrong all the time?
— Smash Mouth (@smashmouth) December 8, 2015
@jessedentn #7HitWonder Two #1’s
— Smash Mouth (@smashmouth) April 1, 2016
@EarlxGreat “One Of Their One Hit Wonders”? ha….. Two #1’s,and 4 Top20. That’s 6 Hit songs. I guess we’re a 6hit wonder. Thanks J!
— Smash Mouth (@smashmouth) June 26, 2015
And they HATE it when people forget that The Monkees cover wasn’t the only song of theirs in Shrek:
@cushac If memory serves me correct there was original song in that film that went to #1 in every Country. Something about stars,….Hmmm
— Smash Mouth (@smashmouth) June 26, 2015
In Gawker’s article about this bizarre frontal lobe failure, author Ashley Feinberg referenced the lead singer’s similarity in appearance to Guy Fieri, which also seems to have saddened the Mouth of Smash:
@ashleyfeinberg @cmolanphy Everything is cool but why the Guy reference? That is just odd to us, that dude broke out 10 years after us.
— Smash Mouth (@smashmouth) June 14, 2016
DATES AND TIMES MUST BE CORRECT! CHRONOLOGY! SMASH MOUTH ABSOLUTELY BLOODY LOVE LINEAR TIMELINES.
While they may be clouded with misinformation, at least the 90s band still have their dignity. Actually… uhhh – never mind.
