Coachella Ban Selfie Sticks, Hate Narcissists

Along with Lollapalooza, Coachella have said a big, fat NO to selfie sticks, from now until probably forever.

There’s been absolutely no official reasoning given for the ban, but it kinda just seems like Coachella hates narcissism. On their official website, the banned list now includes ‘No Selfie Sticks / Narcisstics’ (narcissist + sticks).

Australian festival Soundwave made the same ban earlier this year, and gave the official reason that it was to ‘ensure attendees enjoyment’.

However, founder of Soundwave, AJ Maddah, was fairly vocal on his personal Twitter account about people behind selfie stick users being unable to see. But he brought up his biggest issues in an interview with Fairfax. He briefly mentioned the enabling of illegal recordings of sets and safety concerns, but then spoke of his crystalling moment, watching one of the Soundwave patrons using a selfie stick in Melbourne:

Most of them are pointed at the stage with kids taking photos. But I think the one that kind of put it in perspective for me was there was a band set going and a young girl pointed it at herself.

These reasons all may have contributed to Coachella and Lollapalooza’s decision to ban the camera poles as well, but they sure are being secretive about their reasoning.

So yeah – stay home, narcissists.
