Blue Mountains Bushfires Treated As “Suspicious” By Rural Fire Service

It’s a veritable song of ice and fire in NSW’s Blue Mountains this weekend, as the area undergoes both cool temperatures and ravaging bushfires in Wentworth Falls. A blaze which broke out yesterday has been under control by firefighters over this weekend; strong winds have, however, worsened conditions.

This afternoon, ABC reports NSW Rural Fire Service is now treating the bushfire as “suspicious“, after failing to find any natural causes for the flames.

Rural Fire Service’s Ben Shepherd did not confirm or deny the fires were deliberately lit, claiming the blaze could have just as easily swelled from a campfire accident. “Given the absence of any natural causes, we are treating the fire as suspicious,” Shepherd said.

At the time of writing, blazes posed no threat to nearby homes, according to the NSW RFS. Due to strong winds, the fire has been upgraded to “watch and act” levels.
