A Burning Crane Just Fell On UTS

Today in incendiary local news which may or may not be related to the impending Mayan apocalypse (we hope it isn’t!), a crane jib burst into flames and collapsed onto a vacated University of Technology construction site in Sydney this morning. The Lend Lease crane caught fire just before 9:40 this morning for reasons yet unknown (but quite possibly related to an ignored report of fuel leakage filed by the Construction Forestry Mining and Engineering Union NSW) before it collapsed onto the adjacent UTS construction site on the corner of Broadway and Wattle Streets in Ultimo.

No one was seriously harmed but hundreds were evacuated while firefighters extinguished the blaze. Motorists are advised to find alternative routes through the CBD today with Broadway closed between Harris and Wattle Streets. Bus routes servicing the area have also been diverted and are now expected to experience lengthy delays in both directions. Watch footage of the blaze below…
