The judges are probably kicking themselves right now. Footage has emerged from the ancient depths of 2009 of a then-12-year-old Lorde fronting her high school band Extreme (no, not that Extreme) in a Battle of the Bands competition at Belmont Intermediate High School in New Zealand. The group (who are actually really good for a bunch of pre-teens) kill it with their covers of Rainbow‘s Man On The Silver Mountain and The Cult’s Edie. They came third, which is awkward, because Lorde is still sitting at #1 in the US and just signed a $2.5 million publishing deal. Sucks to be that other girl.
