It’s been a hot minute since we heard new solo music from Tkay Maidza, so sit the hell down and get ready to listen to her new single Flexin’ on repeat all day.
The Adelaide emcee snaps back into top gear on the track, with a grouse little feature from LA rapper Duckwrth, who jumped in the studio with Tkay while he was over here in May.
The track itself is all about being unapologetically yourself, and as a woman of colour in 2018, Tkay’s learning to be less sorry about existing in a volatile landscape. Tkay says that the track came to her after a huge night out, where she ended up just not sleeping and going straight into the studio.
I went to a Mixpak dancehall night & rave in New York the night before I wrote this song with my friends and it was one of the most fun nights I had in a while. I was still awake at 8am and I remembered I had a session that day at 1pm, so I didn’t sleep and went to the studio. I wrote two songs that I really liked in that session and ‘Flexin’’ was one of them.
So, yeah, I’m not sorry that I went to a rave and didn’t sleep because there wouldn’t be ‘Flexin’’.
Sounding a lot like Princess Nokia – another woman pushing the boundaries of rap and hip-hop at the moment – Flexin’ is 100% sure to be an anthem for anyone out there who doesn’t identify as a bloke and wants to take up space and make noise about being stoked on their identity.
Tkay Maidza’s also headed out on tour later this year to play Flexin’ and all her other bangers for the masses in September, as well as a heap of festival dates in the tail-end of the year. Check out Flexin’ below and peep the dates, because you deserve an all-night party. Don’t be sorry about it.
