Take A Crash Course in How to Sing Like an Aussie Artist, Courtesy of Al & Anna

Musical comedy duo Al & Anna appeared on triple j‘s breakfast show last week to regale listeners with a song about the ubiquity of animal band names. This week, the pair returned, to give presenters Matt Okine and Alex Dyson an important lesson in how to sing like a variety of distinctive Aussie artists.
From Gossling and 360 (pictured) to Luke Steele, the pair nailed the various inflections. Turns out that, much like the bitter, cynical dude on your Facebook wall always says, it’s actually very easy to be the kind of artist who gets played on triple j, as long as you follow a couple of simple guidelines.
Allow Al & Anna to teach you.
For those wanting to get right into it, the Cliffs Notes version is:

Gossling: “Sing as far from your natural voice as possible.”

Luke and Katie Steele: “Sing from the back of your throat.”

Bernard Fanning: “Throw a tantrum.”
Lisa Mitchell: “Channel your inner child and don’t pronounce your words normally.”
Sarah Blasko: “Be breathy, sing like you have a huge ball in your mouth, and never pronounce consonants, only vowels.”
Paul Dempsey: “Imagine you’ve smoked a million cigarettes and are lifting something really heavy.”
There you go, everyone. Use this knowledge well. You still have plenty of time to make it to the top of the Hottest 100 this year.
