If you have been following the progression of the public-voted countdown of triple j’s Hottest 100 Australian Albums Of All Time you would probably already know that the ultimate victor was Odyssey Number Five the acclaimed 2000 release by Brisbane’s perpetually touring rock stalwarts Powderfinger.
Once you consider just how well-received Odyssey Number Five was to the Australian public and the huge popularity of Powderfinger in general, it isn’t really surprising that it took out the top spot – because triple j’s poll was ultimately a popularity contest more than anything else.
The album spend 82 weeks on the ARIA Albums Charts, peaking at Number 1 chart position, and went 8 x Platinum selling over 550,000 records (which equates to a shitload in Australian terms). The album won Powderfinger six ARIA Awards in 2001, including Album of the Year, Highest Selling Album, and Single of the Year for Odyssey Number Five‘a biggest single “My Happiness”.
Also cementing the album’s success – and its appeal to triple j listeners – was when its two most popular singles “These Days” and “My Happiness” nailed the Number 1 position in the triple j Hottest 100 over consecutive years in 1999 and 2000 respectively.
Powderfinger records made a total of four appearances in triple j’s Hottest 100 Australian Albums Of All Time. In addition to Odyssey, Internationalist (1998) was voted in at #6, Vulture Street (2003) came in at #14, and Double Allergic (1996) was voted #41.
