Our Top 5 Splendour In The Grass First-Timers

The Splendour In The Grass line-up has been announced, and as free thinking music fans, it was inevitably going to be the case where a lot of us love it and some of us hate it. But rather than get tied up in the laborious taste-informed back and forth or dwell on why heaven and earth wasn’t moved to sign the bucket-listed Blur or how Chvrches managed to slip through the net, we thought we’d pick our Top 5 Splendour First-Timers that have us totally buzzed about our favourite winter weekend.

Frank Ocean

Well, duh! Plenty of us where bummed when he pulled out of Future Music 2012, compounded further five months later when he dropped our favourite album of 2013. Been thinkin’ bout your headline set way too much.

Haim

As with Frank Ocean, Splendour will mark Haim’s first ever trip to Australia. On the back of a European festival tour that includes a slot on the iconic Glastonbury bill, the babin’ Californian sisters will be festival fit and primed to blow us away with their Stevie Nicks-inspired 70’s rock by way of 90’s r’n’b jams.

Robert DeLong

If anything, this year’s line-up is a little electronic-lite which makes Robert DeLong’s inclusion all the more exciting for beat hungry punters. A former drummer turned EDM whiz, DeLong’s break-out hit, Global Concepts, has been flogged heavily on Triple J, with fans of massive drops and percussive, video game controller manipulated dance music eager for more of the same.

MS MR
Returning for an encore performance after wowing crowds at Laneway earlier in the year, MS MR will hit the stage supporting the anticipated debut, Secondhand Rapture.

The Polyphonic Spree

Okay, yes Polyphonic Spree have played at Splendour before, and yes they were awesome. But they weren’t doing anything like this, performing The Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack in full. Why? Who cares, they just are, and Tim DeLaughter and his fellow 22 cult members performing Sweet Transvestite and The Time Warp will be simply unmissable.
