Listen To Scarlett Johansson’s Sugary Pop Offering Featuring HAIM’s Este

Scarlett Johansson has always been a slashie, of sorts: dabbling in music is not new to her, and neither is slaying in equal measure for brooding roles, speaking-only roles and blockbuster-boss roles. She’s the kind of Hollywood offering whose presence would pair nicely with having a cold one – meeting her in the flesh would be, in a word, heaven.

Today Johansson has officially expanded her oeuvre and repertoire to sugary ironic pop, as she has unveiled the first single from The Singles – Johansson’s all female pop supergroup, featuring the eldest member of HAIM, Este, on drums, as well as Holly Miranda, Kendra Morris and Julia Haltigan.

The first saccharine single is the aptly-titled “Candy”, brimming with generic pop overtones and the repeated lyric, “You’re like candy to my heart”, a phrase that wouldn’t go amiss in any of J-pop sensation Kyary Pamyu Pamyu‘s (Pon Pon Pon, keep up) english interludes. That’s a good thing!

The track was produced by TV On The Radio‘s Dave Sitek. “The idea was to write super-pop dance music written and performed by girls. I love Grimes. And I love the Bangles. And I love the Go-Go’s. I wanted it to be like those bands: ultra pop but also a little ironic, a little in on the joke,” Scarlett Johansson said.

Embeds currently be damned. Listen here.
