Gotye’s Reign Is Over

Not content with ruining just one Australian cultural institution, this week Kelly Clarkson trumped Wally De Backer to claim the number one single in the country. The American Idol alum topped the charts with “Mr. Know It All”, relegating Somebody That I Used To Know to second and ending an eight week reign atop the ARIA singles charts which represents the longest-running Australian number one in 14 years. What a run! But you can’t measure greatness with just singles sales – that’s what endorsements are for. A music fan named Ashton loved it. So did Lilly Allen. Your parents too. Your indier-than-thou friends/workmates admitted it was “a pretty good pop song” with surprising levels of conviction. You amassed a disgusting amount of listens and still wanted more. Your neighbours wouldn’t stop playing it…repeatedly. You made a shortlist of the summer films it could soundtrack because you were bored. You thought about your past relationships. You danced. You sang along. You cried. Wait, you cried? Somebody definitely cried. You. Felt. Emotions. And it all came perilously close to not happening. Check out Wally’s take on 2011’s most inescapable ode to heartbreak below. We have a feeling we’ll meet again.
