Bloody Beetroots Dish On Venom Masks And Big Day Out

Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo – producer, dj and the pulsating heart of electroclash outfit The Bloody Beetroots – is in the country playing Big Day Out, which has its final tour leg happening today in Perth. Pedestrian recently got the chance to ask the mysterious masked Italian a few questions about touring with the Big Day Out family, working with Dennis Lyxzén (hardcore legend from Swedish punk band Refused) and the truth about what it’s like to wear the Beetroots’ signature Venom masks: “fucking uncomfortable”, apparently…

Best moment of Big Day Out tour? When my legs started shaking from the heat before I started jumping

Which acts on the bill were the most fun to hang out? M.I.A. and Grinderman

Who was the biggest asshole? You know what? Nobody. This festival is really cool, there is no competition, just music.

How did you hook up with Dennis from Refused/International Noise Conspiracy? I called him asking if he wanted to do some electronic bullshit with me. He said yes.

He has been performing on stage with you. How did that end up happening? We are good friends and we wanted to try something different. After remixing New Noise, it was a natural next step . Refused were a great band, have opened a lot peopleìs minds and Dennis has a lot to say. We tried to fuse two worlds that often seem distant. Electronica and Punk HC. The Bloody Beetroots sound comes from that fusion.

Who else do you have plans to collaborate with in the future? I would like to collaborate with many artists but I’m trying to focus on the right ones. Artists who fit in well with BB culture and can use BB as a platform to talk to our fans.

Is there anyone you have asked to remix or work with you who has turned you down? No

Tell us the truth about the Venom masks. Do they get unbearably hot to perform in? Have you ever had any run ins with Juggalos (Insane Clown Posse fans) They are fucking uncomfortable, I was on the verge of fainting at least 10 times . Juggalos? I’m not from Detroit!

You’ve just released a remix album. What?s your favourite track of the bunch? The only one not on it: “Dimmakmunication”. It’s still a bootleg.
