Feng Shui is a concept that’s thrown around a lot, but have you got any bloody idea what it is? Probs not. I certainly didn’t. It’s actually a Chinese philosophical system based around harmonising human beings with their surrounding environment. You know what’s nice? HARMONY. So therefore, feng shui is also nice.
Look, this is going to be a real bastardised version of feng shui. It’s a complicated legitimate concept that I’m not going to pretend I’ve studied for yonks and have any true, deep understanding of. But there are principles you can action in your room that’ll at least up its levels of harmony bc it’s probably a complete nightmare on the feng shui front right now.
NO TV OR COMPUTER
Aaah I hit you right in the guts with this one, didn’t I? Yep, the first thing to do to cleanse your room of bad energy is to boot the computer and TV. They’re associated with stress and work, both things your bedroom should not have anything to do with. If you can, do your computer stuff in the lounge room, and keep the bedroom strictly for sleeping and ~love making~.
GET RID OF CLUTTER
The entire deal with feng shui is having free-flowing space for energy. So clutter obviously ruins that. Everything should be stored away neatly wherever possible, and if you’re a hoarder of books, perfume, makeup, or just weird knick knacks, try being a minimalist and chucking/donating everything you don’t love or need.
DON’T ALIGN YOUR BED WITH THE DOOR
Oh god, this is so creepy. Apparently if you have your bed aligned with the door (as in, your feet face the door when sleeping) it resembles a coffin because coffins are taken away feet first. Noooooope. It does not mean you are going to die. The theory is you lose energy when you have your feet facing the door to sleep, so try and move your bed elsewhere. You could also try the Command Position – having a clear view of the door from where your bed is placed.
HAVE AN EASILY ACCESSIBLE BED
Continuing with beds, you should try and have your bed accessible from both sides, with two bedside tables. A bed against a wall restricts the flow of energy, apparently.
GET SOME AIR IN YOUR ROOM
Your room should be full of fresh air and oxygen, so whenever you get the chance open the windows to get some air flow going. Alternatively, you can get an air purifier – a good op if you live on a main road and find the air’s a bit car exhausty.
FIX BROKEN STUFF
Broken light bulbs, a wonky bedside table, jammed windows – it’s all bad feng shui. Even clothing with tears or damage isn’t good. It’s because they reflect ‘brokenness’, so fix what you can and chuck out what’s unfixable.
RETHINK BEDROOM ART
Art that reflects loneliness, sadness, anger or depression create those emotions within us if they’re in our bedroom, according to feng shui principles. Instead, have art that reflects what you want to feel and how you want to be in life – happiness, love, friendship, and intimacy are good starting points.
HAVE A CANDLE
Candles are apparently the best light when it comes to feng shui, as they clear bad energy from a room but also create and intimate and warm atmosphere.
CLOSE ALL DOORS WHILE YOU SLEEP
That’s everything from your bedroom door to your drawers. Having all the doors closed keeps the energy flowing in your room at night, as opposed to it “escaping”.
