The Number Of Young Aussies Living W/ Mental Illness Is At An All-Time High

This year the theme of World Health Day (today, btw) is Depression, Let’s Talk. It can be one of the hardest things imaginable but it’s so bloody important, apparently now more than ever, as the number of Aussies experiencing mental health issues reaches an all-time high.

More than 1.7 million 18-34 year olds are currently living with one or more mental health conditions right now – ranging from depression to anxiety and panic attacks – which is a v. alarming statistic when you think about it.

The data, released by Medibank‘s Better Health Index, shows that the number of Aussies with depression has increased by more than 340,000 since 2009, and anxiety and panic attacks have practically doubled in the last decade.

We know mental health issues are on the rise, and worryingly, our data shows a particularly steep upward trend amongst young Aussies. We don’t want to keep seeing these figures increase; if you’re suffering with a mental health condition, take a lead from this year’s World Health Day theme and chat to a loved one or professional about how you’re feeling,” Medibank’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Linda Swan, said.

Interestingly, our physical health – which can have both direct and indirect impact on our mental health – is better than ever, with more and more of our age group eating clean and training mean. There’s an increase in exercise among us (59% have broken a sweat in the last three months), and an overall decrease in drinking and smoking, as well as less fast food and sugar across the board.

Swan suggests that our lifestyles, in comparison to that of older generations, could be contributing to Australia’s increase in mental health conditions. More specifically, the role of technology in offering looser living and working routines.

“We know that a lack of routine can heighten stress and symptoms of mental health issues, and this could be playing a role in the trends indicated in this Index. While more research needs to be done into the impact changing lifestyles could be having on our mental wellbeing, it’s worth considering the potential connection as well as the role of increased awareness on the number of diagnoses we’re seeing. Disconnecting for a while and practicing mindfulness techniques such as meditation could help, however if you’re battling with your mental health, remember that your GP is always there for you.”

For the longest time I had no idea that speaking to a psychologist could be hooked up with a GP, so this is me explicitly telling you.

If you’ve been putting it off, don’t.
