‘Wilfred’ Getting US Remake With Elijah Wood

A boy, a girl and a bong smoking dog who thinks he’s human in television’s most dysfunctional love triangle… If you haven’t been fortunate enough to stumble upon Australian comedy series ‘Wilfred’ on SBS, then you’re missing out on one of the most original, smart and fucking funny locally made programs on TV. It isn’t that much of a surprise that this fantastic little gem has been discovered by a man no stranger to black humour, David Zuckerman – the co-creator of Family Guy and American Dad, is currently working on a U.S. remake of ‘Wilfred’ which is set to star the Shire’s most notorious hobbit Elijah “Frodo” Wood.

Hopefully ‘Wilfred’ won’t go the same way that another beloved homemade comedy series did when it was adapted for an American audience; although you would think in the hands of Zuckerman who has had plenty of experience working with dogs after working with Brian for eight seasons of Family Guy.

‘Wilfred’ was the brainchild of writing team Adam Zwar and Jason Gann and follows the exploits of Wilfred – the jealous and insecure pet dog of doting owner Sarah. When Sarah starts a relationship with Adam, Wilfred (played by Gann in a dog suit) turns to psychological warfare to sabotage the relationship, triggering a man-dog rivalry like no other.

Elijah Wood will be playing the role of Adam, while Jason Gann will still play the title role – which comes as a huge relief (and will to anyone who loves the show). I just couldn’t deal with anyone else taking an upstanding wee in that costume.

‘Wilfred’ is on Monday nights at 10pm, SBS.
