Most people have only just recovered from 27 Dress so why release another bridesmaids movie? In real life bridesmaids are nowhere near as tiresome, whiny and sub-attractive with a giant bow on their teal satin dress that matches the giant chip on their shoulder about being unmarried. That’s all a big myth. In reality most bridesmaids are fun, upbeat champagne-toting saviours who are good for a laugh and full of excellent tips about control briefs and honest hair advice. Why then does cinema insist on portraying them as either man-stealing whores (Muriel’s Wedding, My Best Friends Wedding), troubled black sheep (Rachel Getting Married, or certifiably insane (La demoiselle d’honneur).
Enter the Judd Apatow-produced Bridesmaids which, based on the trailer, might actually be the most palatable bridesmaid movie – and a slapstick comedy no less – that’s come along for a while. Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne, Ellie Kemper, Melissa McCarthy and Wendi McLendon-Covey star as the titular nuptial handmaidens, and SNL alum Maya Rudolph plays the bride. It actually looks kind of funny and borderline real-ish. The brilliant and hilarious Kristin Wiig also wrote the script so that’s gotta bode well. Watch the trailer and see what you think.
Bridesmaids is due for release May 2011.
