‘Top Gun 2’ Is Apparently Happening, With Tom Cruise As Maverick

While nobody was specifically crying out for a sequel to the 1986 classic Top Gun – which introduced the world to the homoerotic possibilities of volleyball, and the concept of Tom Cruise as an action hero – a Top Gun sequel is exactly what we’re getting.

Hooray for us!
At a recent press conference in Berlin, David Ellison, CEO of Skydance Pictures, confirmed that the unnecessary sequel is happening, with Tom Cruise back in the pilot’s seat. He told reporters:
Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today. There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick.
Cruise is no longer exactly a young hot shot, but Ellison says that the script will reflect this, with his character returning as some kind of grizzled veteran who’s getting too old for this shit:
As everyone knows with Tom, he is 100% going to want to be in those airplanes shooting it practically. When you look at the world of dogfighting … this world has not been explored. It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters … It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today.
Cruise is pretty heavily invested in sequels right now, with Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation due out later this year, as well as something called Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, to which we actualy, literally can not even.
