The Most Watched TV Shows Of The Year So Far

Having finally considered the ever-evolving changes in audience preference between online and TV viewing, Australia’s major television networks seem to have captured back some of our attention… for now. And with what, you ask? Well, other than our beloved Neighbors taking the cake for most watched ‘drama’ (everyone together now… ‘Neeeeiiighhhborssss… everybodddddy needs good…’), what other than the ever-predictable yet somehow rhythmically hypnotic happenings that seem to fundament that of reality TV. Since the introduction of our beloved Freeview channels, we have seen an influx of programs based on, put simply – other people… and by the looks of 2012’s mid-year ratings results, we seem to love it.

Although incredibly odd it would be to find many (if any) members of our Gen Y community unlikely to be downloading/streaming content on a week-to-week, or more likely – day-to-day basis… one might assume our cultures richness in multi-tasking may have leant a hand in the increase of free-to-air ratings… either that or we just enjoy reality TV viewing due to our love to observe and critique others triumphs, failures and behaviours to validate and encourage our own. I’d put it down to that said combined… or otherwise Australia could simply just have a lot of soon-to-be Aretha Franklin and Jaimie Oliver’s kicking about (cough). If you’re dubious of my theory, that’s fair. Let’s just wait until the end of year ratings surface after a season of network Nine’s Big Brother and Ten’s Puberty Blues going head to head.

Despite this fragmented and biased (or as I envision it – zombie like) viewing, we in short, have so far this year succumbed to commonality across the board. Although we have too wasted many hours tuning into what I’m sure you’d agree to be shitful television, in many ways ashamedly I’ll admit my admiration for our winning networks – clever them for tapping into (and cashing off on) the humanistic intrigue of the lives of everyone else around us…

Let’s now reflect on what was and make way for what’s to come for the (let’s hope) better half of twenty-twelves TV viewing.
