Writer-director Derek Cianfrance’s film Blue Valentine is competing in the Un Certain Regarde category at Cannes, and has been garnering strong reviews ever since premiering at Sundance in April. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams star as a couple desperately trying to hold their failing marriage together told in past and present moments in time, featuring music by Grizzly Bear as the sonic backdrop.
Reviewers have called it “heartbreaking”, “an absolute must see”, “intensely real”, and the two central performances are meant to be lovely. It’s not due out in Australian cinemas until Christmas 2010.
Acting as a couple who are madly in love is one thing, but I’ve become concerned since seeing photos of Michelle and Ryan on the Cannes red carpet earlier today.
