Naomi Watts Cast As Princess Diana

Continuing the uptick in Home and Away alum landing coveted movie roles, Deadline reports that Naomi Watts (Mulholland Drive, 21 Grams, King Kong) will play the lead role in Princess Diana biopic Caught In Flight.

The film focuses on the final years of Diana’s life and will chart how “finding true personal happiness for the first time allowed her to achieve her defining successes” that is until our incessant need to document said happiness resulted in her death in a Paris car crash in ’97. Director Oliver Hirschbiegel – whose Oscar nominated Downfall also mined the final days of a deceased historical figure, except, you know, one who killed heaps of people instead of helping them – seemed overjoyed with the decision: “I am delighted to have such a truly exceptional actress who embodies the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana.”

Watts was similarly ecstatic. “It is such an honour to be able to play this iconic role,” she said. “Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.”

It is not yet known which of her progeny Rupert Grint will play.
