The 1st Trailer For Netflix’s New Doco About Michelle Obama Is Like A Warm Hug On A Shitty Day

Michelle Obama

In a lovely surprise, Netflix has dropped a first look at a documentary focusing on the one and only Michelle Obama.

Becoming, the same name as Obama’s best selling 2018 memoir, is an intimate look into the life of the former First Lady of the United States of A. The doco gives viewers a rare and up-close look at her life as she embarks on a 34-city tour to promote her book.

“Those months I spent traveling — meeting and connecting with people in cities across the globe — drove home the idea that what we share in common is deep and real and can’t be messed with,” Obama said in a statement. “In groups large and small, young and old, unique and united, we came together and shared stories, filling those spaces with our joys, worries and dreams. We processed the past and imagined a better future. In talking about the idea of ‘becoming,’ many of us dared to say our hopes out loud.” Honestly, I’m already inspired.

The film is directed by Nadia Hallgren, best known for her Oscar-nominated Trouble the Water and Girl Rising.

“It’s hard these days to feel grounded or hopeful, but I hope that like me, you’ll find joy and a bit of respite in what Nadia has made,” Obama added.

In the first look, Obama is asked by a young girl at a community event about getting her life “back on track” after being first lady. Obama replied that it wasn’t so much getting back on track, but creating a whole new track.

“I’m doing what you’re doing,” she explained. “I’m figuring out what do I want do to, what do I care about. And it takes time to process your life and figure out what it all means. So little of who I am happened in those eight years, so much more of who I was happened before.”

Becoming will premiere on Netflix Australia May 6, at 5.00pm AEST.
