Next year, Benedict Cumberbatch will play highly against type when he portrays Marvel‘s Doctor Strange, mightiest magician in the cosmos and wielder of eerie, mystical powers.
In their recent ‘First Look’ issue, which is lousy with – you guessed it – first looks at blockbustery-type things, Entertainment Weekly have published the very first photo of Benno in his full Doctor Strange regalia.
On the cover, he’s looking about as staunch and serious as anyone reasonably can while rocking a jaunty cape and an amulet and shooting magic runes out of their hands, but … we’re definitely feeling it:
In the accompanying interview, Cumberbatch spoke about how nervous he is to get all of Doctor Strange’s magical gestures exactly right, lest crazed Marvel fanboys crawl up his butt:
It was like, okay, I’ve got to keep throwing these poses, these spells, these rune-casting things, everything he does physically. I’m thinking, there’s going to be a huge amount of speculation and intrigue over the positioning of that finger as opposed to it being there, or there. And I’m still working on that. We haven’t played any of those scenes yet.
The movie is out in November 2016, and co-stars Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mads Mikkelsen.
