Guillermo Del Toro is tackling the genre so befit to his sensibilities it’s shocking he hasn’t already done it earlier, with the extremely promising gothic thriller ‘Crimson Peak’ on the way this year.
Del Toro, as you’ll know, is cinema’s equivalent of an admirable jack-of-all-trades: he equally perfects dark spanish fantasy such as Pan’s Labyrinth as he does with Kung Fu Panda, Simpsons’ intros, and The Hobbit. He is cinema’s overachiever, and we adore him for it.
Coming in 2015 is Del Toro’s newest and most exciting film, starring Australia’s Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain and a positively evil Tom Hiddleston. Naturally, all three are the definition of “slaying it”. Del Toro reportedly said that ‘Crimson Peak’ is the first ‘adult’ movie he’s done in English (discounting ‘Blade’ himself), and said the aim of the film was to marry the feel of ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ and ‘Devil’s Backbone’ to create one solid masterpiece. The film features a haunted house, slightly off-putting sibling vibes, ghosts for days and textbook thriller creaking floors, doors, everything. Chills I tells ya. Chills.
