First LEGO, Now Warner Brothers Are Making A Movie Based On Minecraft

Ah, Hollywood. She is a vicious soul. A vacuum of dazzling lights for all content and concepts to be drawn into, like moths to flame. And there is naught that exists outside of her is immune to her allure.

We’ve already seen one blocktastic take on a childhood toy spring forth onto the big screen with surprising greatness in The LEGO Movie, which not only was a box office success – taking in well over $400 million on a $60 million budget – but a critical one as well, with a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, scores of positive reviews, and a severe fan backlash when it was somehow overlooked for even a nomination in its key category for the recent Academy Awards.
And thus where lightning blockishly struck once, so will it again. Or, at least, that’s the hope of Warner Brothers. After successfully proving that everything is indeed awesome through LEGO, the studio is taking a stab at building another success out of a similar adaptation.
Along with Roy Lee – one of the producers behind The LEGO Movie – the studio has acquired the rights to the wildly popular open-world game Minecraft, with scores of writers and filmmakers already reportedly brimming with excitement at the potential that bringing it to the big screen holds.
Swedish game developers Mojang AB sold the film rights to their smash-hit game franchise to Warner, who are seemingly keen on creating a live-action version for the silver screen. Along with Lee, Jill Messick will also help produce the film in some capacity, having previously served as executive producer on Mean Girls, Hot Rod and Baby Mama.
No word yet on who will be penning the script, or how any potential story will play out. But given the source material’s sandbox style environment, the possibilities, quite literally, are practically endless.
