‘Fantastic Four’ Flopped, So Now We Might Get ‘Deadpool 2’ Early

While we were fairly pumped for the most recent Fantastic Four reboot, given the star power involved and director Josh Trank‘s previous effort, Chronicle, we may have been a bit premature in our excitement.

The film has been roundly slammed by reviewers – it currently holds a 27% ranking on Metacritic – and it made just $26.6 million on its US opening weekend, not a great result for a movie that cost many, many times that.
Assuming it would be a hit, because it has the word Marvel attached, the good people at 20th Century Fox went ahead and scheduled a Fantastic Four sequel for 2017.
Given the public’s yawning indifference towards the movie, though, they now find themselves in an embarrassing predicament, and it may take no less than Ryan Reynolds to pull them out.
Since Comic Con this year, the buzz surrounding his upcoming Deadpool movie has continued to grow – the internet went apeshit for the dodgy, leaked trailer, and even more apeshit for the real thing.
Per reports in Complex, the current rumour circulating around Hollywood is that the studio will simply wipe the next Fantastic Four sequel from their slate, and rush another Deadpool into production for release on the same date.
While the decision to replace one unknown quantity with another could be considered somewhat ~foohardy~, the Deadpool movie does seem like somewhat more of a sure thing.
Plus, it’s good news for Ryan Reynolds who, IDK, seems like a perfectly nice guy to star in a hypothetical hit franchise.
The market for superhero movies is incredibly crowded over the next few years – at our last count, 2017 will also bring you Wonder WomanWolverine and Thor sequels, The Justice League Part 1 and Guardians Of The Galaxy 2.
Really, what’s one more costumed dude in that already crowded bunch?
