The already somewhat odd-sounding standalone Joker movie just got a little more strange with the announcement that Alec Baldwin has joined the cast to play Thomas Wayne, Bruce Wayne‘s wealthy father. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the script of the film has Thomas Wayne depicted as a ‘cheesy and tanned businessman who is more in the mold of a 1980s Donald Trump‘.
Thanks to Saturday Night Live, Baldwin spent a lot of time in Trump make-up in the period following the election, back when we were still trying to imagine that things were going alright in the world and that comedy was still possible.
Joker is set to be a darker, lower-budget approach to superhero movies than DC has been doing so far, purported to be a 1980s “hard-boiled crime drama” focusing on, you guessed it, the Joker, as portrayed by the unfathomably intense Joaquin Phoenix.
Robert De Niro, Marc Maron, and Atlanta’s Zazie Beetz have also all signed on to the project. It’s scheduled for release sometime next year.
