A seemingly innocuous behind-the-scenes ‘Game of Thrones‘ video released by HBO has potentially dropped a giant spoiler for the upcoming season.
The video, titled ‘Inside Game of Thrones: A Story in Cloth‘, is intended to be a nice + innocent look at the incredible costumes used in the series, interspersed with clips old and new to help visualise the story-telling.
But we’re talking GoT fans here. If George R.R. Martin was murdered by Sherlock Holmes himself, GoT fans would have the suspect, murder weapon and motive down pat within the hour.
So you can bet they’ve combed the hell out of this video for clues.
When we last saw Ellaria (played by Indira Varma), she’d just murdered half her family in Dorne and was meeting with Lady Olenna to discuss war with the Lannisters.
Ellaria promises Olenna her “heart’s desire”, which she guess is “vengeance”. (Remember, this is after Cersei blew up the Sept, murdering Olenna’s son and grandchildren.) Suddenly, Varys appears outta nowhere, promising “fire and blood” and strongly hinting that Ellaria has already thrown her support behind Daenerys and her incoming army.
So how the hell does Ellaria end up in chains in Cersei’s basement? Who knows – but the trailer did give us a split second shot of Ellaria making out with Yara Greyjoy, who was last seen also throwing her support behind Dany.
But if you’re chained up with Cersei and the Mountain… looks like it’s lights out for old mate Ellaria. You had a good run, mate.
Of course, there’s a bunch of other minor spoilers included in this BTS video. More like hints, really – we already know this season is going to involve a LOT of war, and you can’t battle your army against other armies without a whole lot of people moving from place to place:
1) The Hound playing with fake snow, indicating he (and potentially the Brotherhood Without Banners) will be moving north.
2) Sansa Stark in the crypts of Winterfell while a wardrobe assistant carrying… something behind her. Some people are claiming it’s Needle a.k.a. Arya Stark‘s sword, but honestly, you’ll have to decide this one for yourself.
3) Jon Snow standing on a cliff on Dragonstone, which we already have confirmation from the teasers that Daenerys will be retaking. It begs the question on how this long-lost family reunion (Jon is her nephew) will pan out.
4) And Samwell Tarly getting his Harry Potter on in the restricted section. This means nothing, but christ, it certainly is a shot.
