It’s been, oooooh let’s see, about 12 months since our last leadership coup – aren’t we about due for one?
If reports coming out of the Sydney Morning Herald – which claim Tony Abbott has reportedly been gabbing to Torie allies in Britain that he has a “reasonable chance” of clawing back the top job – are to be believed.
A “senior Liberal source” told Fairfax Media political reporter Latika Bourke that Tone’s belief he could return to the PM job stems from Malcolm Turnbull‘s continued “dismal performance”, which is helping boost his own popularity with the party membership.
Tone has denied any such thing, though, describing the report as “unsourced, unattributed and unprofessional” and accusing Bourke of “yet again making things up”.
Bourke’s standing behind her exclusive, though, saying: “I absolutely stand by my story and sources”.
Abbott responds after refusing to deny earlier. And of course I absolutely stand by my story and sources. https://t.co/DNuQRY0Vl5

It was only a week ago that Tone declared – in no uncertain terms – that his leadership aspirations were “dead, buried and cremated”.
