The former Grill’d worker who was fired for speaking out against the low-paying wage agreement has emerged from the ensuing legal drama with the taste of sweet, sweet victory, getting a “substantial” payout from the burger chain.
Kahlani Pyrah, 20, was set to appear in Federal Court this week to make her unfair dismissal case, but in the end didn’t have to – the parties reached a settlement that SMH are calling “substantial”, but “confidential”.
Speaking to Fairfax, she said:
“I was able to set a positive example to hospitality workers that you can stand up for better wages and fair treatment and win.”
“I wanted to overturn Grill’d below-award wages and I succeeded … that means thousands of Grill’d workers will get a pay rise.”
The healthy burger chain came under masses of fire for paying a flat rate of $17.52 in lieu of weekend rates or overtime, as well as their $11.50 an hour compulsory traineeships. Exact details of the new agreements are TBD, but although Grill’d says they want to “modernise” the agreements, they’re holding on to those cheap as (sweet-potato) chips traineeships for all they’re worth.
