ICYMI (which unless you were living in a media blackout you probably didn’t), Ireland voted yes to marriage equality last week.
Ireland will allow gay marriage. Ireland. A predominantly Catholic country, but not Australia. SMDH.
Australian politicians have reacted on Twitter to the fact that when a country that still criminalises abortion says yes to gay marriage, then maybe – just maybe – Australia should catch up with the rest of the world and JUST LEGALISE IT ALREADY. GAWD.
Ireland today, Australia when? Time for @billshortenmp @TonyAbbottMHR to end discrimination and vote for #marriageequality.

Time for Australia and our Parliament to embrace marriage equality. Congratulations Ireland

Greens will push for a vote on #marriageeqaulity in the Senate before the year is out. Time for the parliament to catchup with the people

Tony, mate, it’s time to leave the 1950s behind. Most Australians are quite relaxed with the idea that some gays want to get hitched

Let’s go Tony Abbott. The Howard-Rudd-Gillard years of ‘No’ are a failure. Like the Irish, Australians want ‘Yes’. Bob Brown.

Nice work Ireland #MarriageEquality #ThatsAll
— Stephen Jones MP (@StephenJonesMP) May 23, 2015
Inspiring to see Ireland’s march towards equality. Let’s hope live wins the day and Australia follows next. #IrelandVoteYes

And then there’s this guy (managing director of the Australian Christian Lobby):
Disappointing to see marriage redefined in Ireland. Children lose the legal & cultural assumption that biological parents matter.

And this PSA:
Marriage Equality in Australia requires change to an Act of Parliament not constitutional change via a referendum. #auspol #IrelandVotesYes

So, um, hurry up and get on with it? Maybe?
