Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead Remake

If you were a child of the Nineties, there’s a 99% chance you’ve seen one or both of the following: Drop Dead Fred and Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead. Both of these were classic school holiday movies from 1991, both highly quotable (“cobwebs”) and both starred round-faced teen dream beauties (Phoebe Cates, Christina Applegate). But if Fred’s nose-picking and poo jokes weren’t your thing, it was hard to top Don’t Tell Mom….

For those who haven’t seen it, the premise has Sue Ellen (Christina Applegate) and four younger siblings left with geriatric babysitter from hell when “Mom” goes to Australia for summer hols. The babysitter has fatal heart attack and the kids are left without any money, so Sue Ellen submits fake resume to land job at “hip” fashion company so kids can be fed… Madcap adventures follow, filled with Belgian waffles, inter-sibling drama, amazing ’90s fashion, Josh Charles cuteness and supersoaking a creep in the crotch.

As per Hollywood’s recent obsession with remakes (new versions of Predator, Karate Kid, 21 Jump Street, etc are on the way) “Don’t Tell Mom” is getting rebooted with Ashley Tisdale rumoured to be up for the lead. Sue Ellen was like the coolest, most beautiful, badass movie characters EVER (in 1991 to a person less than 10). Ashley Tisdale would be a tragedy. That would be like getting Lindsay Lohan to play Garth in a Wayne’s World remake.
Oh hang on…
