DENDY Launching Streaming Service To Rival Netflix, Presto and iTunes

DENDY, of DENDY Cinemas fame, is set to launch an “exciting new movie and TV service” called ‘Dendy Direct’ in July i.e. sometime in the next couple of weeks. According to DENDY they have “handpicked quality movies and TV shows for you to watch on any device, anywhere you like!”

For now there’s no word on how large the library will be or exactly how much a subscription will set you back. The Dendy Direct head of digital, Kate Stapleton, did say that costs “would be consistent with the industry”.

She continued saying, “If you look at iTunes or Google Play our pricing will be the same as that. It’s a pay as you go model.” And in terms of the actual content? Kate reassured everyone that they “have deals in place with most of the major distributors as well as the indies.”

DENDY, which is owned by the American production company Icon Productions (founded by Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey), has been fanging around in Australia since 1940 and, as Kate said, “will have a much more curatorial approach to the store [than Google Play or iTunes].”

She also got the chance to throw shade in the direction of Netflix and asserted that “it is illegal to access it in Australia.” Yeah, sure. Okay. “Netflix’s content is not new release. We hope people will view Dendy Direct as a complimentary service to Netflix,” she continued.

She finished with: “We intend to cater to the things our customers love. We have a sticky customer base who are very loyal to us and it’s great to be able to extend that relationship into the home.”

And so, viable streaming services are slowly but surely becoming a reality in Australia.
